How did we know?

I want to deal with the K.M.'s reminder that the religious claim that god/God has indicated something is not right about our current state. Given my Christian upbringing I was fully aware of it when I wrote that "we have not been informed by another superior species our condition need to be adjusted."

Those who make that claim convenient forget that the God they are referring to in that context is the same God they claimed created the entire universe in six days. Consequently, His state of mind is very important to this claim. As the Creator is stands to reason that He would know whether the human species is functioning as it should. But, as the Creator His reaction would not be to tell us that we are malfunctioning. He would make the necessary repairs because the problems that plague us were all created and sustained by us. We are doing what our human nature allows us to do and we received that human nature from our Creator.

In which case it should truly be good news -- a report on the thing that has been done, given to the people for whom it was done, acknowledging the One who did it...

Here is another aspect of the human anomaly. The best way to acknowledge "the One who did it" would be to accept what has been done. Instead, we find ourselves fighting against each other in a vain attempt to accomplish what has already been done, which demonstrates that we don't believe it has been done.

It is as confusing as it sounds. I hope that this conversation can help us emerge out of the morass we have created.

Take your time, Kafo. The issues aren't going anywhere, and neither are we. :)

What DAL's getting at is that even when Christians talk of "salvation" and an all-powerful, all-knowing God, the arguments and strategies we latch onto that talk suggest a not-so-powerful, not-so-wise god. That is a problem of consistency, and creates further problems down the road too.

If God knows all there is to know, especially about the things He made Himself with His hands and without help from any other -- there is nothing that creation will be able to do that could shock Him or shake Him out of His nature: He's the one that gave creation its nature and characteristics, and set limits for it. Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, and Job all tell us this explicitly.

If God is wise beyond measure, then, knowing the nature and weaknesses of His own creation, and being love Himself, He would leave nothing undone that neded to be done. To leave something undone that needs doing and that you can do is not wise. It's not even something that parents tolerate from their children! :)

On that basis, we cannot say that He still has work to do. Rather we can say that we have an overdue response to what He has already done. He did something, and we have received a report of it -- we received "news." As He is good, and what God has done is for our good, we call it "good news," the gospel.

There is no need to fight about our perceptions. Our perceptions don't change what the Creator's nature is, or what He has done. Our responsibility is to respond appropriately to that news. But we can only do so once we understand what it is, and what it implies about our position in and relationship to the world He made.

Does a person need to accept Christianity to respond appropriately? No. But that is another post. I'm sure DAL will get there eventually. :)
